Her affiliations include the board of directors at Socialtext and Kiva, advisory board chair at Actuate Corporation (Nasdaq:ACTU), advisor to clean tech startup Syn(CH) Energy, Web 2.0 start-up Plum, and social ventures Women’s Initiative and EARN.

Previously, Julie was an entrepreneur-in-residence at Silicon Valley venture capital firm Mayfield, where she founded and became CEO of Scalix, a pioneer of open source email software that grew to become the market leader with nearly 1000 customers in 55 countries.

Before Scalix, Julie was founding executive of a number of successful business software and consumer internet startups. Among them onebox.com (acquired by phone.com now OpenWave, Nasdaq: OPWV), where she and her team brought to market the fastest growing internet communications service in 1999; Portola, where she was instrumental in the acquisition of the company by Netscape, 2Bridge, where she coined the term “enterprise portal” and championed the creation of a new software category and Healtheon (now WebMD, Nasdaq: WBMD).

Julie is a regular speaker and commentator on technology and entrepreneurship and a frequent guest lecturer on college campuses, among them Stanford, Wharton, Insead, Oxford and Cambridge Universities. She holds a B.S. in Computer and Information Science from the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), where she was chosen to be the 2008 graduation commencement speaker and named Distinguished Alumni of the Year. She lives on the top of a hill in San Francisco.
